Established in 1927, our facility in Bolton, United Kingdom manufactures and supplies coated substrates for Industrial markets including publishing, commercial printing & binding, stationery & pattern books, wallpaper and durable label applications and coated textiles for key publishing markets, including commercial printing and binding, library binding, stationery and pattern books and swatches.

Red Bridge supplies materials for international passports and security documents to more than 100 nations. As part of Mativ, a global company, and with multiple manufacturing locations, we hold a unique position in the Security markets, which allows us to control and manage the full production process. From manufacturing our own latex saturated base paper, technical substrates and sourcing and control of dyed, woven textiles through to the finished materials. Today, we are the world’s leading booking coverings producer, and export our publishing products to 100 countries around the globe.

A Brief History of Red Bridge

1860

The family business of D Constantine was founded on the present Red Bridge site in Bolton, United Kingdom, although the history of the mill and some of its older buildings go back to around 1750.

1927

A new subsidiary was opened, specialising in the production of bookbinding materials and tracing cloth. This company took the name of Red Bridge.

1941

During World War II, the bleaching activities of D Constantine were closed down as a result of a concentration scheme, however the production of tracing cloths and bookcloths continued together with black out materials.

1945

After the war, Constantine became chiefly a holding company of which Red Bridge was the manufacturing arm. Various companies were bought and sold and ‘new’ technology in the form of nitrocellulose coating and leathercloth production acquired.

1974

Red Bridge is purchased by the Whitecroft Group, which had similar roots and could trace its ancestry back to the end of the 19th century when it started life as the Bleacher’s Association. 

1999

Red Bridge is purchased by Rexam DSI

Red Bridge is purchased by Fibermark

2015

Red Bridge is purchased by Neenah

2022

Neenah Inc. (Red Bridge™) merges with SWM International. to form Mativ™

2023
